Yes, I’m a Child of the 70’s and a Steelers Fan

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

I know I watched a few previous, but for me, my earliest Super Bowl memory was the 1980 matchup, Pittsburgh Steelers v. Los Angeles Rams. Not too many other things resonated more clearly to me at age 8, than the Steelers were the greatest team of all time and that guy from KISS who spits blood was both cool and scary.

If you could look back in time and walk into my room, you would have seen a kids Pittsburgh Steelers helmet, football cards, and posters of the Steelers. When I played football with my friends or just got out in the yard and threw the football around to catch, I always tried to emulate Lynn Swann. To me, Swann was the face of what football should be - awe inspiring.

One of my favorite commercials of all-time, Joe Green Coca-Cola and the kid, coaxed me into dreaming that I too could one day be admired by a real-life football hero.

My affection for the Steelers hasn’t waned, but over the last 10 years, my heart has belonged to another - the Tennessee Titans. Still, whenever I think about the Steelers playing in the Super Bowl, I dream back to a time when as a kid, the Steelers were all I ever wanted to be.
